Yup, this is my first-ever post on a blog. I've never blogged before and to be honest I used to think it was a waste of time. Am I that into myself that the whole world should have to listen to me?
Well, I've spent a lot of time on the internet and I've discovered the value in blogs. Some people really do have meaningful things to say, and you can actually learn a lot from bloggers who invest themselves in their posts. Social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter have been disappointingly superficial and limit meaningful discussion and dissemination of useful information. So I've found the only place to express myself is right here.
What will follow are the experiences, discoveries, and lessons from my life as they relate to becoming a member of the business world. I've got only one summer left before I graduate, so I had better use my time wisely to find a real job and gain some real-world experience.
The purpose of this blog is to chronicle my journey into the professional world as a soon-to-be college graduate. I'll address the central issue of how to become an attractive, competent candidate in today's job market given my amateurish background in creative fields. I hope to share with other amateurs the lessons, tips, and tricks I learn from doing the things I love- filmmaking, sound design/music production, writing- as well as provide links to relevant resources and media.

- I am a junior at Brown University concentrating in Modern Culture and Media. I want my work to be related to my passions somehow, but my experience with my interests is far from "professional." How do I make these things more than just hobbies? I have become an increasingly obsessed sound engineer since Fall 2008, and since then most of what I have learned about sound design has been derived from the internet. I started by messing with Reason 4's software synths and got so immersed in the world of electronic music creation I just had to get Ableton Live and Absynth 4 later on in Summer '09. While there's still much to work on, I've come a long way from "just messing around." I make the soundtracks to my own films, and maybe one day I'll be good enough to make a profit out of my sound-engineering efforts. I am also an avid movie lover and a student filmmaker. While Brown doesn't offer a robust film program, the MCM Department is an open-minded alternative in comparison to other programs in this country. Whether it's in the entertainment industry or with some other form of emerging media, I hope to impact other media-makers or audience members.
